KIMBERLING FAMILY

James Kimberling is said by family tradition to be a native of Germany; He was born before 1783 as he was already exempt from a poll tax by 1833. He died in Greene County, in the region that is now Stone County, Missouri. Wife, Jane's maiden name is unknown. Whether she was the mother of any or all of his children is unknown.

He was listed in Meramac township of Washington Co. Missouri in 1830. All of his children were in the immediate vicinity. His household consisted of 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 40-50; 1 female 10-15, 1 female 40-50.

He was living in Greene County in 1833 and was taxed for 2 cows and three horses but did not pay a poll. He was taxed again in 1834 and 1835.

He was enumerated as James Kimberlain, Jr. in 1840 and is living in what became Christian Co. next to John Hoover and Wm. Smart. His household consisted of 2 males under 5, 2 males 5-10, 1 male 20-30 and 1 male 30-40; 3 females under 5, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 30-40. There is no record of his widow remarrying.

Living near John Birchfield, a later Taney Co. resident, was a Renard Kimberling. His household Washington Co., MO. consisted of 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30 and 1 female under 5 and 1 female 20-30. He may be a son (or relative) of James Sr. who did not move to Greene Co. Emily Birchfield, who later married John McPettijohn, may belong in this household since she does not appear to be in James Sr’s.

James Kimberling left a will which was recorded in Greene Co. in 1844. He left a widow Jane who asked for maintenance for the heirs. A.L. Yarbrough was named Executor and he showed a deed in 1847 that James had executed to John C. Farmer in his lifetime. The witnesses to the will were Henry Wilson and John Hoover. It was written 16 April 1840 and proved 2 May 1844. She was to have all the land south of the Finley and after her death it was to be divided among the children. He was particularly specific that she have the two colts sired by Rob Roy.
