Jim Warren is a nationally recognized professional researcher, writer, and publisher. A partner in the research firm of Warren, Carmack & Associates, his specialties include tracing Southern, Midwestern, New York, and New England families, onsite U.S. research, and immigrant, American Indian, and Irish ancestors.

Jim has been a full-time professional for the past thirty-two years with his research base at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. He is also available for onsite research across the country, at the National Archives, and in Ireland and the British Isles. Jim co-authored Your Guide to the Family History Library and Getting the Most Mileage from Genealogical Research Trips.

Jim’s warm and humorous style has made him a popular seminar and after-dinner speaker for twenty years at annual national conferences in the U.S. and New Zealand, and dozens of state and local seminars in thirty states. From 1995 to 2003 he co-administered and taught the “Discover Your Family History” series of classes hosted by the Minnesota Historical Society. He was Course Coordinator of the annual Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy’s American Genealogy Records and Resources course for seven years, combining classroom instruction with hands-on assistance to students in the Family History Library.

Since 1984, Jim has been an active volunteer in genealogical, historical, and professional organizations. A former president of the Irish Genealogical Society International, Jim also served as a trustee of the Association of Professional Genealogists, as president of the Minnesota Genealogical Society, and as a member of the National Genealogical Society’s Health and Heredity Committee. He served eleven years as a director of the Federation of Genealogical Societies and served four years as its vice president of administration. Jim was the National Conference Co-Chair for the memorable FGS Quad Cities Conference, held 12-15 September 2001 in Davenport, Iowa. He has received the David S. Vogels Jr. Award for career contributions to FGS and its six hundred member societies, and the Association of Professional Genealogists’ Grahame T. Smallwood Jr. Award of Merit.

For seven years, Jim provided extensive research and documentation as one of two genealogical consultants to the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. The results of that research at the National Archives, its Regions, and at record repositories across the Midwest, form the basis for that Tribe’s extensive Archives. Jim has provided consultation or expert witness testimony in Tribal Court, Federal District Court, and Bureau of Indian Affairs Administrative Law Judge proceedings.

During the past fifteen years, Jim has expanded his skills to provide book design, layout, indexing, illustration, and publishing for clients. He is the Publisher of Scattered Leaves Press and Warren & Carmack Publishing.

Prior to his full-time genealogical career, Jim had more than twenty years experience in industry, which has enhanced his organizational, managerial, and people skills. This experience includes his years as a Production Scheduler for Ford Motor Co., New Product Coordinator and Buyer for Eaton Corp., Purchasing Manager for White Motor Co. and Electro-Craft Corp., and ten years as Operations Manager for Power Systems.
